A Winter Storm Warning and an Ice Storm Warning is in effect for much of northwest Texas, including all of the South Plains area, until at least 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28th.

As of 8 a.m. in Lubbock County on Tuesday, October 27th, it was 25 degrees outside with icy roads causing multiple delays and school closures. The Lubbock Police Department has closed down parts of the Marsha Sharp Freeway and Loop 289 until road conditions improve. Keep up to date with the latest road conditions at Drive Texas.

Road closures for Tuesday morning include the following:

  • Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Slaton Highway at 1-27
  • Marsha Sharp Freeway flyover to West Loop 289
  • Marsha Sharp Freeway flyover to 19th Street
  • Marsha Sharp Freeway eastbound lanes at West Loop 289
  • The eastbound West Loop flyover to Marsha Sharp Freeway
  • The eastbound 4th Street flyover to Marsha Sharp Freeway
  • The flyover from South Loop 289 to I-27.

Executive Director for Communications and Community Relations at Lubbock ISD Jeff Klotzman tells KFYO News that all classes in-person and virtual for Lubbock ISD have been canceled.

Frenship ISD and Lubbock-Cooper ISD have also canceled all of their in-person classes today, although Lubbock-Cooper says students will be expected to participate in remote learning.

Texas Tech University said that classes for Tuesday would be merely delayed until 10 a.m., but they have now announced that all classes are effectively canceled, although instructors may move their classes online for the day at their discretion.

City of Lubbock offices will have a delayed opening of 10 a.m., but the early voting location inside the lobby of Citizens Tower will be open to the public at 8 a.m. Lubbock County Judge Curtis Parrish tells KFYO News that the Lubbock County Courthouse will have a delayed opening of 11 a.m. this morning, but essential services, which includes early voting, will still be available to the public at 8 a.m. The Texas Tech Health Sciences Center is closed today as well as health clinics associated with Texas Tech Physicians.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has announced that their offices in the South Plains area will have a delayed opening of 10 a.m. this morning due to winter conditions. The same goes for their offices in the Amarillo and Abilene districts. Texas DPS says to call ahead if you have an appointment scheduled for today to be sure it isn’t affected.

Overnight and early Tuesday morning, Lubbock Power and Light started to receive calls of power outages related to winter conditions. According to their website, about 3,600 customers lost power due to power line damage. Work crews are said to be on the scene of multiple small outages across the city, some of which are due to frozen tree branches falling on power lines.

Winter weather in Lubbock is expected to continue through the rest of the week. Over the next three days, snow accumulations of 1 to 6 inches, ice accumulations of up to 2 tenths of an inch, and wind gusts as high as 35 mph will be possible.

In the Texas Panhandle, up to 10 inches of snow is possible through Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 28th.
