I'm not going to bury the lede here- in my opinion, the cost of tuition versus the education you are likely to get at Texas Tech is well worth the student loans. I will also admit I have a huge bias as my experience with Tech has been an overwhelmingly positive one.

It is also important to note that my degree makes sense in my chosen field. Not everyone has the advantage of that foresight but since I'm a "non-traditional" student, I do. It's self-evident that my English degree has been invaluable, you are reading my article after all.

I will also add the caveat now that many people are better off with a trade school or on the job training. The world will always need plumbers and chefs, etc. Results in education, like anything else, may vary.

My opinion aside, it's valuable to look at the actual numbers, and since I am not anywhere near a math major, I'll use a source created by people who are more mathematically inclined.

According to smartasset.com, Texas Tech ranks in the top 10 Texas universities for "Best Value".

SmartAsset looked at five factors to determine the best value colleges and universities in the U.S.: tuition, student living costs, scholarship and grant offerings, student retention rate and starting salary for new graduates.

The number 1 rated school is, not surprisingly, Rice University. However, with a low ball estimate of tuition cost at $45,608 and nearly $20K in living costs, the "gamble" is quite a bit greater than TTU.
