If you've spent more than one summer in Lubbock, you know the drill.

By mid-afternoon, the sun feels like it's about six feet closer to Earth, the pavement is hot enough to fry an egg, and even your truck's air conditioner starts negotiating with you.

Now imagine fighting a house fire, directing traffic after an accident, responding to a medical emergency, or searching for a missing person in that same heat.

That's exactly why the Lubbock County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is once again asking the community to step up during its annual Support Our First Responders (SOFR) Campaign.

A Simple Way To Say "Thank You"

The SOFR Campaign is all about making sure the men and women who keep Lubbock County safe have one of the most basic necessities while they're on the job: cold bottled water.

The campaign has officially been extended through July 31st, 2026, giving the community even more time to help reach this year's goal.

So far, donations have provided enough funding to purchase 22 pallets of bottled water.

That's impressive...

But organizers are aiming for 60 pallets before the campaign wraps up.

Here's How You Can Help

One of the easiest ways to support the effort is by stopping by Market Street at 3405 50th Street, at the corner of 50th and Indiana, on Saturday, July 11th, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Volunteers will be accepting:

  • Cases of bottled water
  • Monetary donations
  • Support from businesses, churches, civic groups, and organizations

If you can't make it that day, monetary donations can also be mailed directly to the Lubbock County LEPC, where every $200 donation purchases an entire pallet of bottled water for local first responders.

More Than Just Water

This campaign may seem simple, but its impact reaches every corner of Lubbock County.

Every bottle donated helps firefighters battling grass fires under the blazing West Texas sun.

It helps sheriff's deputies working crash scenes for hours.

It helps EMS crews responding to emergencies in triple-digit temperatures.

And it helps volunteer firefighters who leave their jobs and families behind whenever the pager goes off.

West Texans Take Care Of West Texans

One thing I've always appreciated about living here is that when someone needs help, this community doesn't hesitate.

Whether it's filling a food pantry, raising money after a tragedy, or making sure our first responders have plenty of water during another scorching summer, Lubbock always seems to answer the call.

If you've got an extra case of bottled water, or a few dollars to spare, consider helping the people who spend every day helping us.

Because when temperatures climb into the triple digits, a cold bottle of water isn't just refreshing...

Sometimes, it's exactly what our first responders need to keep going.
