Road Construction Begins in Downtown Lubbock, Expect Delays Through April
Improvements to our great city don't happen overnight. Don't take my word for it, literally drive five minutes in any direction in Lubbock and you are bound to see some bright orange cones blocking your path.
In the latest of construction projects, the Hub City is seeing lanes closed for work being done on I-27 in downtown Lubbock near Broadway St.
What Should Travelers Expect?
If you take I-27 to work, expect delays heading northbound with alternating lane closures all the way through April 30.
Common locations around the area that may require drivers to plan ahead and leave early include the following:
- Lubbock County Courthouse: 904 Broadway St, Lubbock, TX 79403
- Lubbock County Juror Parking Lot: 14th St, Lubbock, TX 79401
- Panhandle South Plains Fairgrounds: 105 E Broadway, Lubbock, TX 79403
- Buddy Holly Hall: 1300 Mac Davis Ln Suite 1, Lubbock, TX 79401
Watch for Potholes... The Surprise That Nobody Loves
Something that I have noticed after the massive snowfall that Lubbock recently saw is the increased presence of potholes. I nearly dipped my tire in the crater that conveniently rests in the turn lane on my way to work this morning...
Whether it's sending snowplows to shovel the heavy snow from the roads or it's applying a sand/salt mixture to melt the ice, Lubbock roads have many dips, holes, and craters that drivers need to be aware of.
If you find yourself on the road after another snowstorm, the Texas Department of Transportation provides essential tips for sharing the space with snowplows:
- Always stay at least 200 feet behind a plow since drivers can't see directly behind them
- Know where the plows are on roads and highways at all times. You never want to be surprised to see one out of the blue
- Never attempt to drive through a white cloud produced by kicked-up snow surrounding plows
