A motorcyclist in West Texas recently died after colliding with a crossing passenger car, shining light on the hidden dangers on Texas roads and highways.

One Dead in Ector County Car Accident

On Sunday, September 13, officers in Ector County responded to a motor vehicle accident just after midnight.

What investigators discovered was that a Chevrolet Camaro was travelling westbound while a Harley Davidson motorcycle carrying a driver and one passenger was trailing behind.

The Camaro attempted to veer right before cutting back left to make a U-turn. The motorcycle driver did not respond in time and collided with the rear, left-side of the Camaro.

Following the impact, the motorcycle driver sustained severe injuries while the passenger, 26-year-old Mindi Lane Harris, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Camaro sustained minor injuries.

Texas Motorcycle Data

In Texas, the staggering number of motorcycle deaths each year can be broken down to the following four reasons:

  • Perception failure
  • Decision failure
  • Reaction failure
  • Comprehension failure

Many accidents involving motorcycles are a result of several factors, but when they are a direct result of the motorcycle driver's actions, then there are some tips that all drivers must remember.

First, always pay attention to your surroundings and look twice before making a decision. You are most likely the smallest player on the road, so making sure that other drivers see you is crucial for staying safe.

Left turns are also a hot spot for motorcycle crashes. Always keep in mind where other drivers are and never make a turn without double-checking that the path is clear.

Finally, keeping a safe space between you and the car ahead is very important. When all else fails, slow down and approach the situation slowly. Acting with haste does nothing but add fuel to the chaos and remove your control of the situation.

With all drivers on the road, especially motorcyclists, adhering to these tips, West Texas can become a much more safe environment for all.
