Living in Lubbock isn't for everyone. Between the fact that the wind personally assaults you every chance it gets and the arguments over whether or not beans go in chili, things can get a little hectic around these parts.

Surviving Lubbock

Survival here requires a little more than just common sense. It essentially requires its own code of conduct. And, since Texans seem to really love commandments, I thought I'd put together a list for anyone having a tough time adjusting to their new settings.

The 10 Commandments of Surviving in Lubbock

1. Thou shalt trust thy father-in-law before trusting a weather app.

How does he always seem to know better?

2. Thou shalt brace for wind before opening the car door.

You'll learn.

3. Thou shalt respect traffic laws on the loop.

Quit speeding, buttheads.

4. Thou shalt know at least one Buddy Holly song and keep it holy.

Everyone's grandma knew him in high school.

5. Thou shalt not act like a fool at the Tech game.

Tortillas are fine. It's the other stuff. Don't be that guy.

6. Thou shalt never underestimate the power of an Allsups burrito.

It's a blessing. It's a curse. It's covered in hot sauce. Put it in my mouth.

7. Thou shalt keep Chapstick in every glove box, purse, or pocket.

Not gonna sugar coat it. We stay chapped around here.

8. Thou shalt not complain about dirt storms.

Shut up, ya' big baby. Our grandpas lived through the Dust Bowl.

9. Thou shalt give landmark directions only.

Nobody has time for anything else. Just tell us how close it is to the DQ off Slide.

10. Thou shalt never ignore the sunset.

It's the purdiest thing we've got around here, and boy, is it beautiful.

I think that about covers it, folks.

Follow these commandments and you just might thrive in this dusty little-big town! At the very least, you'll avoid people telling you passive-aggressively that they'll be praying for you...
