After working extensively with its suppliers, a locally owned and operated Lubbock restaurant has switched from seed oils to beef tallow for frying.

Should Lubbock Restaurants Use Beef Tallow Instead Of Seed Oils?

Seed oils, a restaurant standard for cooking and especially frying, have recently come under public scrutiny. It is ALL over TikTok and other social media platforms- at least if you are like me and follow many nutrition accounts.

The "danger" of seed oils, especially in modest amounts, may be currently overhyped, but they can potentially skew your body's omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Why Does My Omega Ratio Matter?

An imbalance of omega-6 and omega-3s can lead to chronic inflammation, which can cause or worsen conditions like:

  • Arthritis
  • Heart disease
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes

However, if you are eating seed oils in moderation, you probably shouldn't worry about this too much, unless you already have one of these ailments. The best policy would be to talk to your physician.

But Is Beef Tallow Better?

If we are talking flavor- ab-so-freaking-lutely! Remember the way McDonald's nuggets tasted when we were kids*? That was beef fat, baby.

However, beef tallow is loaded with saturated fat, which can lead to heart disease. So whichever fat you choose, just do it in moderation.

I Want The Beef Tallow, And I Want To Eat Local. Where Do I Go?

Cast Iron Grill, located at 620 19th St, made the switch to beef fat. I bet the chicken fry is REAL tasty.

An excerpt from their Facebook Post:

It has been 4 weeks since we changed from canola seed oil to Beef Tallow & it truly has exceeded our expectations. [...]It has an amazing taste, and it has just enhanced our flavor.

Folks in the comments responded very positively:

This is awesome news for those of us with RA Etc. Thank you so much for caring and making the food you serve even better!

It is very good! Tried it yesterday! You always had a great product though!

As someone with food sensitivities - THANK YOU!

Better for you or not is debatable, but I'm sure that flavor is b-o-m-b!
