At some point in adulthood, many of us accidentally become the low-maintenance friend. You know, the one who “doesn’t need much,” “is always chill,” and “totally understands” when plans fall apart for the fourth time in a row.

Congratulations. You are emotionally flexible

Also: slightly neglected.

Here are the signs you’re that friend, and the small, quiet price you pay for being so damn easygoing.

1. You Say “I’m Good” So Often It’s Basically a Personality Trait

You don't want to burden anyone with your feelings, so you kind of just bottle them up, until one morning you explode at Walmart because the 20-year-old checker gave your SpongeBob jammie pants the side-eye.

2. You’re Everyone’s Backup Plan (And You Pretend That’s Fine)

You’re the friend people call after other plans fall through. And you always say yes. Because you’re “flexible.” And “free anyway.” And not secretly wondering why you’re never the first call.

3. You Cancel Plans and Feel Immediate Relief (ME AF)

Canceling doesn’t make you sad; it gives you a full-body exhale. Suddenly, you’re in sweatpants, your phone is on Do Not Disturb, and peace returns to the land. You love people. You just love being alone slightly more. This one resonates with me the most. I love it when people cancel plans.

4. You Never Ask for Help (Because You’ll “Figure It Out”)

You will struggle in silence, Google everything, and emotionally white-knuckle your way through a situation rather than ask someone for help. Asking feels like an inconvenience. Suffering quietly feels…responsible? I mean...you wouldn't want to call your parents. Then, they might worry... and that would be a whole thing.

5. Everyone Thinks You’re “Strong.”

You are, but also tired. Very tired. Being low-maintenance doesn’t mean you don’t need care; it just means you’ve learned how to survive without asking for it. It may sound kind of sad, but look at it as a strength. You can be on your own without having a full-on meltdown or a panic attack, and that is NOT everyone. Ask my ex...

But...The Cost?

You’re easy to love… but sometimes easy to overlook. And maybe it’s time to admit that being low-maintenance doesn’t mean you deserve less attention, it just means you’ve been really good at not asking.

And honestly? You deserve a little fuss. I hope someone fusses over you extra today.
