The job market can be really tough, and sometimes finding a job is a full-time job itself. Substitute Positions May Be The Answer

Every school district will soon find itself in need of substitutes as schools begin their sessions. Pay rates range depending on the school district (apparently Lamesa pays best), and your level of education, be it high school/ GED, college, and/or a teaching certificate. You will need to pass a background check and possibly a drug test. Otherwise, you can usually determine your schedule, which can be either half or full days, one day or several in a row. You'll always have weekends and holidays off.

More Than Just A Day- Possibly A Career

While a sub position can be great for folks who need a temporary gig- like retirees, or people who are actively applying to jobs in another field- it can also lead to long-term placements and perhaps even a full-time career. There are a variety of substitute positions that become available, from school nurses to library, and plenty of academic subjects, too.

Don't Babysit, Make A Difference

While some see subs as glorified babysitters, I would encourage anyone who takes these positions to use the opportunity to care about that classroom, if only for that day. We all have unique experiences and wisdom to share, and it's possible your teaching style or advice will reach a student who might need it.

The only sub experience I actually remember from my childhood was a negative one (a lady told me, a 12-year-old, that I was going to hell for wearing a rock t-shirt), I like to think that there's plenty of smart, kind people who could make a sub day a memorable one, not just because the kids got to watch a movie that day.
