The Best Things to Do in Lubbock When You’re Broke
Being broke in Lubbock in 2026 is the new fad. If you're walking around with extra cash in your pocket right now, then good for you. The rest of us are miserable.
Luckily, our city happens to specialize in ultra-low-budget entertainment by accident!
If your bank account looks like mine, here are some genuinely fun things you can do around town without spending much money.
Walk Around First Friday Art Trail
To me, this is the undefeated champion of "fun stuff to do when you're 100% financially unstable."
You can spend as much or as little as you like while enjoying live music, cool sculptures, incredible local art, and enough random crowd energy to keep things interesting for several hours. It's a great place to take the kids to.
Go Thrifting
There is no shortage of Lubbock thrift stores.
Vintage jackets, weird stuff you didn't know you needed for $1, ceramic frog lamps that may or may not be haunted. What's not to love?
Even if you don't spend any more, it's first-class entertainment.
Watch Prairie Dogs at Mackenzie Park
This one is always fun, especially if you haven't been since you were a kid.
Go watch those little cuties pop in and out of their holes. See how many you can count. Give them silly names. They are pretty stinkin' cute, and totally free to stalk! Take full advantage.
Go to a Local Coffee Shop and Pretend You're Productive
This is a classic broke-person activity.
Spend 6 bucks on coffee, and you've just unlocked several free hours of air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and good vibes. Take your laptop. Take a book. Take a nap on the comfy couch when the dude that was hogging it finally gets up for a refill. (Okay, maybe not that last one.)

Hit Up an Estate Sale
This is a hidden gem in Lubbock. You don't have to buy anything; you can just wander around and look at dead people's expensive stuff! It's like..harmless urban exploration with porcelain chickens and old crockpots. Plus, you never know when you might come across a deal you can actually afford!
Explore Lubbock Parks Early in The Morning Before The Sun Gets Angry
If the weather is cooperating, Lubbock parks are actually pretty nice. I try to visit them early in the day when it's still cool outside. Take a picnic from home! Some of my best memories were of picnics with my parents at Higginbotham Park.
Watch a West Texas Sunset
This one might sound a little corny, but sometimes a good sunset gives you a chance to think about all of the things in your life that are actually going well. Slow down, kick your feet back, and watch the orange, pink, and purple vibes of a real West Texas sunset.
It will help you appreciate the small stuff and forget about your looming electric bill for a few moments. Priceless.
