I think there's one personality trait that makes life in Lubbock run a whole lot more smoothly. It's got nothing to do with money or how long you've lived here.

It's adaptability.

West Texans are surprisingly good at rolling with whatever kind of punches the day throws at us.

Plans change, things break, and we just keep on going.

Adaptability in Lubbock

Thinking about my own friend group, the people who are the happiest are NOT the ones with the highest numbers in their bank accounts, or the flashy trucks in the driveway.

The friends of mine who seem to be enjoying life the most are the friends who don't let a minor inconvenience ruin their day. They don't get bent out of shape over the occasional flat tire or waiting in line at the grocery store. They let the day's troubles slide off their back like water off a duck.

That kind of attitude goes a really long way.

It also has a lot to do with the reason Lubbock still truly feels like a community. People really help one another out here without making a big deal out of it. Need a jump? Chances are, someone with cables will stop. Need to borrow a trailer? You probably know someone willing to fork it over quickly.

Adaptability also means appreciating Lubbock for what it is instead of pulling it apart and comparing it to Dallas, Austin, or places it clearly isn't. Every city has its ups and downs, but one of the biggest advantages of Lubbock is that the happiest locals embrace the kooky things that make this place unique.

In Lubbock, having the ability to adjust and laugh when things don't go your way is more important than we realize. Regardless of what happens, you can still make the most of your day here if you have the right attitude.
