Lubbock International Airport Gets A Texas Tech Makeover
I didn't think this was a thing, but I guess someone did.
What It Was
On my last trip out of town, I spied the "Welcome To Lubbock" signs and I thought they were an excellent touch for both out-of-towners and those of us coming home. It sure doesn't hurt to let people know that you're happy to see them and I thought the cool blue design was really neat.
How It Looks
I like the sign because it has the ol' red, white, and blue, but not in an overly aggressive kind of way. It "hints" at a patriotic motif instead of overdoing it. That might not seem like a necessary change to you, but by doing that it looks like its own thing and not like some hack politician threw it together.
Don't Forget Where You Are
Someone obviously said a little sumptin-sumptin to the people in charge of the sign, because it has changed, oh-so subtly. It took me forever to realize that there was something very different about it. Have you figured it out yet? Here it is:
Yes, Lubbock Is The Home Of Texas Tech
The sign's colors have shifted to represent Texas Tech. It doesn't matter if this is an "official" or "unofficial" change towards the University, people like myself know exactly what it's about. The gray in the back works well with the red and black. The are other changes as well including the scrollwork and the star. By the way, the star is the only thing I don't like about this, because it looks like a gas station logo.
Maybe I Missed Something
I have no idea who owns the sign or the logo. It really doesn't matter. I would say to them, good on you for representing Texas Tech, but let's not give up on that sky blue entirely. I think that calming blue is reminiscent of one of the greatest things about Lubbock and that's that "we have more sky". I would also tell you that once the logo "burns" in a little bit, playing with the colors is a wonderful thing. Maybe we can do some orange and black next Halloween?
