A Lubbock man was killed during 4th of July celebrations.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that 25-year-old Nathaniel Vargas was crossing U.S. Highway 62 near FM 1729, southwest of Idalou.

According to Texas DPS, at around 11 p.m., Vargas went to the center median of the highway to extinguish a small fire that had been caused by fireworks.

That’s when a 2017 Honda Ridgeline, driven by 53-year-old Amy Cantu of Lubbock, was traveling west on Highway 62 and struck Vargas as he attempted to cross back over the highway.

Vargas was pronounced dead at the scene.
