Unwritten Rules You Learn After Living in Lubbock for One Year
Nobody hands you a manual when you move to Lubbock, and by golly, they should. There’s no welcome packet explaining why everyone owns five jackets or why the wind feels personal. But after one full year here, you pick up on the rules, the ones nobody says out loud, but everyone follows.
1. The Wind Is Not Weather — It’s a Lifestyle
You’ll stop checking the forecast and just assume it’s windy. Hair plans are fictional. Trash cans migrate. If something blows away, it belongs to the wind now. Fighting it only makes it stronger.
2. “It’s Only 15 Minutes Away” Is a Lie
Everything is allegedly 15 minutes away, regardless of where you’re going or the time. This includes places that are clearly across town, under construction, and actively on fire. Accept this and move on.
3. You Will Eat in Your Car. Often.
Lubbock is a car-eating city: Breakfast tacos, burgers, fries, all consumed while parked or at a red light. Sitting down to eat is optional. Shame is nonexistent.

4. Dust Will Appear Indoors Somehow
You didn’t leave a window open. You didn’t track it in. It just arrived. Dust obeys no laws here and will settle on surfaces five minutes after you clean.
5. Everyone Has “Their” Grocery Store
People don’t just shop for groceries — they pledge loyalty. The wrong grocery store says things about you. No one explains this, but you will feel it in your soul.
6. Weather Sirens = Vibes Check
Sirens go off, and nobody panics. People step outside, look at the sky, and casually decide if it’s worth worrying about. If the neighbor stays on their porch, you’re fine.
7. You’ll Stop Explaining Lubbock to Outsiders
At first, you defend it. Then you stop. If they know, they know. If they don’t, that’s between them and God.
8. Worst of all, You’ll Stay
This is the biggest rule. No matter how much you complain, one day you’ll realize Lubbock quietly got under your skin. And whether you meant to or not, you’re home now.
