The Most Valuable Lesson You'll Learn Spending Time in Lubbock

If you spend enough time in Lubbock, eventually you'll learn something incredibly important:

People matter much more than appearances do.

It sounds really simple, but it's true.

Our city doesn't try very hard to impress people. We don't have much in the way of tourism. No beaches or glamorous attractions. Practical buildings and restaurants that have looked the same since the 80s. The best food in town usually comes from a place with a parking lot full of potholes.

But, the people here? They are solid. 10/10.

Hang out here for a while, and you'll notice strangers here are much less "strange" and much more helpful than anywhere else in the world. People you barely know, or don't know at all, will help you push your car to the gas station, show up at your house with a casserole when you lose your pet, or even just sit with you in a hospital waiting room when you're afraid to be alone.

The complaints I hear about Lubbock are typically about construction, Tech game scores, or the weird weather. You rarely hear anyone complain about the people.

That's the lesson Lubbock teaches you. Community isn't about looking big and impressive. It's about being reliable and kind. It's about showing up for your neighbors over and over again without asking for anything in return.

Lubbock is made of people who will help you move your entire apartment with 30 minutes' notice, neighbors who always check in on your grandparents, and teachers who remember your name for years.

When you grow up here, you think things like this are normal, but if you leave for a while, you'll realize just how rare they are. Lubbock is truly a special place, no matter how flat and dusty, and that's because it's made of great people who really care.

I don't know how we got so lucky, but I'm all about it. Thanks for being part of what makes this place great.
