It hasn't been easy to be a business on 19th Street between i27 and University for (checks notes) years now. And while it is finally substantially complete now, that type of hit to any business- even one backed by a massive corporate infrastructure- is hard to recover from. And many businesses called it quits or barely survived during those years.

Lubbock Loses 19th Street Pizza Hut

It is possible that the loss of this Pizza Hut was part of a larger culling of underperforming locations. According to USA Today, 250 "underperforming" locations are to be closed in response to a loss in the final quarter of 2025- a time which saw significant growth in other brands like Taco Bell. And it's easy to "underperform" when people have difficulty getting into your parking lot for 3+ years.

That area also lost a Taco Villa, which has been expanding with new locations in other parts of town, proving it's not a brand problem, but that the location was toxic for fast food, which tends to operate on high output/ thin margins.

But Nobody Out Pizzas The Hut!

Lubbock still has several Pizza Hut locations all across town, including my favorite location at 11814 Indiana Ave. Did you know you can get a personal pan pizza and 4 boneless wings for $7? Well, now you do. It's called the MyHut Box, and it's a delight.

(Delayed) Construction Kills

Here's hoping the utter debacle that was the 19th Street construction never happens again. And to the local businesses that stay afloat during that time, we salute your grit, determination, and sacrifice. I hope it pays off big for you now.
