The first thing I did as a homeowner was let my front yard "go native." I forbade traditional mowing, now only tall grass gets the weed eater while wild flowers are allowed to do their thing.

Now, there's pretty purple phlox, dainty backfoot daisies, and several other varieties whose names I'm excited to learn. I am pulling up the goat beard (sorry, goat beard) but otherwise leaving my front yard to its own devices.

Why Should Lubbock Have "Pocket Prairies"?

There are many stunning ecosystems on this planet- vibrant tropical rainforest, majestic tundra, and the temperate forest of fairytales. But none of those stir my soul like the vast and colorful expanse of native prairie land.

Prairies host a vast array of flowers in all the shades of a majestic sunset. Stately grasses host a variety of native wildlife like lizards, birds, butterflies, and small mammals, like our de facto mascot, the prairie dog.

But would you want a pocket prairie on your property?

I think for many, the answer is a resounding yes. If you are hemorrhaging cash on a water bill and chemicals for a lawn, a more native yard will save you tremendously.

Additionally, you are creating a huge welcome sign for native pollinators that will help certain trees and garden plants thrive.

Is It Legal To Let Your Yard "Go Native" In Texas?

Yes! No state laws are preventing you from having a pocket prairie on your property.

However, you do want to make sure you are not breaking a municipal weed ordinance- there is a BIG difference between fostering native wildflowers and just having a yard full of waist-high sticker plants.
