Why Lubbock Street Names Feel Like Inside Jokes

If you've ever tried to give an out-of-towner directions in Lubbock, then you know it's less about Google Maps and more like performing a stand-up comedy special. Our street names don't just guide visitors from place to place — they also entertain us like someone in city planning was pulling a prank.

For example, Slide Road. Slide? Slide into what? Denny's? A ditch? None of us really know, but we all say it like it's a perfectly normal street name. (Of course, there's real history behind all of these names, folks. Just humor me for a moment.)

Don't forget Milwaukee Avenue. It sounds like a midwestern bar, but it's actually where Lubbock goes to drown during flash floods. It certainly doesn't take the edge off anything. Indiana, Chicago, and Boston? It's like we have an entire travel brochure of streets, but none of them lead you to the airport, or anywhere remotely cool.

We've also got the curve balls: 82nd, 98th, 114th. When you reach those numbers, you feel like you're in another city completely. Things get more expensive and fancier the higher the numbers climb. It's like driving from Mexico to New Mexico...

Meanwhile, the Loop is less of a loop and more of a roller coaster. Cross your fingers and make sure you buckle the kids in properly before takeoff. You're the ride attendant now, and you don't even get the hook-up on funnel cakes and fried cheese. BS.
