Lubbock Unsolved Case Files: The Brutal Murder of Stefanie Hill
On the surface, this is a case that should have been solved long ago, or at least that's what any True crime doc or episode of Forensic Files would lead us to believe. Sadly, life isn't so made-for-TV, and the results can be unsatisfying, or in the case of Stefanie Hill, devastating.
This may seem like a "cold" case; however, investigators, as recently as last year, have stated that they are still actively working to solve this mystery.
The Tragic Death of " A Wonderful, Sweet, Caring, Loving Person"
That's how Stefanie Hill was described by her friends, and as someone with no enemies, no vices to speak of. Stephanie was a typical new Tech student who also worked at Outback Steakhouse. Just a nice, normal girl.

One night, after coming home to her apartment after work, someone brutally beat her, including multiple blows to the head, and possibly also strangled her. Her apartment was then set on fire, probably to destroy evidence. Stefanie had no serious previous boyfriends and had no enemies that her friends knew about.
Why Was The Murder of Stephanie Hill Not Solved?
Indiana Village apartments, especially back in the early 2000s, are mostly populated with Tech students- meaning that neighbors likely know each other at least in passing, and probably "look out" for each other. This crime happened on Memorial Day at 12:50 a.m. in 2000. Granted, it was a Monday, but a holiday nonetheless- was no one awake and around to have seen something that would help break open this case?

In fact, a man was seen nearby before the fire broke out: "walking away from the burning apartment wearing a baseball cap and a dark shirt." Is this the killer, or someone who has information that could lead to the killer? While there have been theories about this man, I was unable to find further details about him.
Brutal beatings and arson are not clean crimes. Both typically leave behind piles of evidence, including blood splatter, prints, DNA, the type of acclerant used, etc. However, it is possible that in extinguishing the fire, much of this evidence was compromised.
Stefanie may have been stalked prior to her death, and it does not seem like a coincidence that this was a rare occasion she was not with her best friend, as they were nearly inseparable. Stephanie had reported her car window being smashed previously, too.
Why This Still Matters 26 Years Later
People still love Stefanie and are still hurting from her death. Closure for the family and justice for Stefanie absolutely matter. And to think that a brutal, calculated killer is still on the loose is bone-chilling. If you happen to know anything about that night at all that could bring light to this case, please reach out to LPD. Stefanie deserves our help, even over 25 years after her untimely death.
