Lubbock’s Mamaritas Tastes Like Good Times With Great Friends
I hadn't been to Mamarita's Border Cafe (6602 Slide Road) in a few months. There was no particular reason for my absence beyond the fact that I think most of us are treating ourselves less often in an attempt to navigate a tough economy.
However, I'm currently using the "excuse" of being on a round of meds for a bad backache as a reason to eat a decent lunch every day. Yesterday I had an errand at the mall and opted for Mamarita's.
My first thought was, "Why am I not eating here all the time?"
Mamarita's always has inexpensive lunch specials and low prices across their menu board. The environment is relaxed and friendly, the ladies at the counter even laughed at the dumb jokes between my husband and me.
I loaded up at their signature salsa bar. I love the fresh and diverse flavors. I also love that the cups are generously sized. They know you want as much salsa as your plate can handle.
Our food came out quickly, perfectly prepared, and with generous portions. Since Mamarita's operates on a counter service model, you also save on tipping, although I like to throw a few dollars in the shared carafe by the register.
Between ample brisket tacos, fish, shrimp, and crispy fried taquitos served with creamy dreamy queso, it was a filling and satisfying meal.
I've been coming to Mamarita's with friends for many years. The interior is so relaxed and comfortable, and there's even a nice patio if you'd like a little more light.
If you are looking to seriously relax, the attached bar Fat Dawg's is also a comfortable place to catch up with friends.
So many chain places want you in and out of there, and they'll charge you $7 for a taco I got at Mamarita's for $4.
I always try to support local, but sometimes it isn't better than the big boys. In the case of Mamarita's, it is better, by every metric I can think of- comfort, price, taste, and service.
Thank you for an affordable and memorable lunch Mamarita's. Here's to many more years of memories made together.
