Lubbock’s Star Comics To Celebrate Halloween With Really ‘Sweet’ Treats
Looking for a "sweet" treat that won't give you a tooth or tummy ache?
Lubbock's Star Comics is celebrating Halloween with free comic "treats" while they last on Saturday, October 26th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at their Halloween Comic Hullabaloo.
From their Facebook Event Page:
Star Comics Presents...HALLOWEEN COMIC HULLABALOO!!
Start your Trick or Treating early, Saturday, October 26th, 11am-6pm.
We have some FREE "Trick or Read" comics (While supplies last.), and you can still take advantage of our $1 comics sale: Buy One $1/Get FOUR Free! (That's FIVE Comics for $1!!!)
Costumes are not necessary, but they are appreciated.
This is a great opportunity for kids and adults to celebrate the holiday in a non-candy way (you can always do that later at a Trunk-or-Treat).
Star Comics has been Lubbock's orginal independent comic shop since 1977- giving generations of readers and fans a place of discovery and community. That's beautiful.
Let me take this opportunity to get on my soapbox about comics and childhood literacy- one of my favorite topics as someone who once worked at a library.
Comics have been shown to improve literacy in both children and adults and are also an excellent way to promote literacy in a second language.
According to Seeds of Literacy, comic books promote literacy in several ways, including providing a strong motivation to read, being dialogue-driven (great for second-language learners), and providing a great method to improve reading comprehension by pairing images with text.
By interacting with both the text and images, the reader can easily comprehend and visualize the story. The more they do this, the easier and quicker they can build their reading comprehension skills.
I recommend pairing this event with another longstanding local favorite business- Ralph's Records. Ralph's will be hosting their first-ever Fall Festival on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., giving you plenty of time to drop by both.
Ralph's will have giveaways, food trucks, pop-up shops, giveaways, and special sales throughout the day.
Ralph's AND Star Comics? Lubbock really does have some amazing cultural gems that make me proud to live here.
