We live in a world where we get one good Adam Sandler performance for every dumpster truckload of bad Adam Sandler movies. Netflix may be shoveling Sandler original movies at us like coals into a fire – and hey, you’re to blame, America – but they’re also behind the latest Noah Baumbach movie which allegedly features the best Sandler performance since his surprisingly poignant turn in Punch Drunk Love.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) debuted back at Cannes to rave reviews (and also a little bit of controversy). Baumbach’s latest stars Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Elizabeth Marvel as three adult siblings struggling to deal with their stubborn father (Dustin Hoffman). The first teaser trailer finds Sandler’s Danny playing a tune on the piano – hm, maybe Sandler’s acting skills only manifest when his characters play keyboard instruments? – and singing with Marvel and Stiller. Some other stuff happens, like Hoffman breaking a pool cue, Emma Thompson holding some chinese take-out, and Stiller punching Sandler. Here’s the full synopsis:

From writer/director Noah Baumbach, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is the emotional and comic intergenerational tale of adult siblings (Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Elizabeth Marvel) contending with the long shadow their strong-willed father (Dustin Hoffman) has cast over their lives.  With an original screenplay by Baumbach, the film also stars Emma Thompson, Grace Van Patten, Adam Driver, Candice Bergen, Judd Hirsch, and Rebecca Miller.  The film was produced by Scott Rudin, Baumbach, Lila Yacoub, and Eli Bush.

After making its way to the New York Film Festival next month, The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) will hit Netflix and have a theatrical run on October 13, when we can all finally decide if Sandler can indeed pull off a good dramatic performance more than once. In the meantime, enjoy this new still of Emma Thompson looking more fly than your mom in the ’60s.
