It's hard to find a cheap rental home or apartment in Lubbock unless you don't mind living in a dumpster. I recently downsized from a 3-bedroom rental house to a small efficiency apartment because I was fed up with paying an astronomical amount to have somewhere to sleep and watch Netflix with my cats.

So, how can you find cheaper rent in Lubbock, or anywhere else?

According to real estate experts, you should avoid websites like Zillow and Apartments.com. While they offer convenient access to hundreds of listings, you won't always get the best bang for your buck.

TikTok creator @ironbones shared a video detailing why you should skip out on popular rental sites that direct your attention toward corporate-owned overly priced complexes and opt for renting from an actual person instead.

Check out what he has to say about where to look to get the best deals:

When was the last time you looked in the newspaper for a rental? I'm not sure if I ever have. Most of the time, I forget the newspaper even exists. It might be time to pick up a copy and check out the classified listings.

If you don't have luck with the paper, check out the rent list at your local chamber of commerce. I had to do that when I lived in a small town out in the middle of nowhere. It was the only way to find out what was for rent in a one-square-mile town. I didn't realize big cities had all of the rental listings too. Noted.

The third place he mentioned in the video is Craigslist. Craigslist gets a bad rep most of the time, but if you're smart about it, you should be able to maneuver through unscathed. Just don't ever give anyone money for a place you've never seen, and make sure you have a legitimate rental agreement in writing before you start packing to move. There are a lot of scammers out there.
