Out Of Control: Feral Hogs Cause Massive Damage To Texas Park
Feral hogs are a growing problem here in Texas.
I could almost admire these descendants of abandoned domesticated pigs for their tenacity—their ability to survive and thrive—if they were not wreaking havoc everywhere they go.
Recently, they destroyed a city park- leaving city officials no choice but to shell out $150,000 in repairs.
Feral hogs love to dig, wallow, and rough up just about anything, which they did at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station, Texas.
The damage was caused before a huge soccer tournament with over 100 teams, so College Station had no choice but to repair the park quickly, and expensively.
This footage is possibly (and) hopefully the same group of pigs. One commenter quipped, "It’s an Army reserve base…give the reservists some M16 practice," and I'm afraid I have to agree:
There are rules as to when and how you can kill feral hogs in Texas, but they do happen to be pretty lenient given the extreme nuisance feral hogs pose to Texas landowners.
In addition to tearing up the park, feral hogs cause billions in damage annually in the U.S. They tear up irrigation lines, destroy streams/ creeks, and cause automobile accidents.
They also harm native Texas wildlife by eating young and tearing up nests. They even cause harm to native alligator populations by disrupting nests and eating eggs.
Because feral hogs are such a problem, there is no closed season for hunting the animals, and they can be hunted all over the state.
However, even with open season on hogs, their explosive birth rate presents Texas with a problem that we are currently losing.
