Lyons Magnus LLC is voluntarily recalling the frozen shakes, which come in many flavors and under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial for potential Listeria contamination.

The shakes were not available for retail sale but were distributed to facilities like nursing homes. Elderly people and people with compromised immune systems are more likely to suffer severe symptoms or even death if sickened by Listeria.

The shakes were packaged in 4-ounce cartons (much like the milk we received in school) in flavors vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and strawberry banana. You can see what the cartons look like, along with lot numbers, here.

Sadly, this outbreak has been connected to many illnesses and several deaths:

As of February 24, 2025, a total of 38 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes have been reported from 21 states. Of the 38 people for whom information is available, 37 people have been hospitalized, and 12 deaths have been reported.

These cartons were distributed to several states, including Texas.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that causes human disease and is found in many places, including soil, garbage, rotting produce, and more. It can thrive even under refrigeration.

Symptoms include, "fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur, and often persists for 1 to 3 days" in mild cases and, "headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions" in serious cases. People over 65 are at a greater risk of dying from Listeria, which is why this outbreak has proven so deadly.

Any facility that has these items should quarantine them immediately and, of course, not serve them to anyone. They can reach out to their distributor with questions or contact Lyon Magnus at frozenshakerecall@lyonsmagnus.com.
