South Plains College’s Creative Arts Department has launched a new Youth Live Ensemble music course designed specifically for young musicians in the Lubbock region and beyond. The course, open to youths ages 10 to 17, gives students of all skill levels the opportunity to learn how to perform in a band, improve their instrumental skills, and receive guidance on vocals from experienced music faculty.

This new offering, part of SPC’s expanding Creative Arts lineup, aims to make musical education accessible, hands-on, and performance-focused for aspiring musicians. The course will give participants a chance to experience real band settings while using professional-level equipment under the mentorship of SPC music instructors.

What to Expect from the Youth Live Ensemble

The Youth Live Ensemble course will meet regularly on the South Plains College campus in Levelland, providing structured rehearsals that emphasize collaboration, musicianship, and technical skill. Students will learn how to play their instruments within a group context,  including bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, and vocals,  and build confidence performing with peers.

Unlike traditional music lessons that focus solely on individual practice, this course centers on ensemble performance, giving students practical experience in forming musical groups and learning how to balance sound, timing, and showmanship. These skills are valuable not only for students interested in future music careers but also for those who simply love music and want to grow their abilities.

Designed for All Skill Levels

Young musicians of all experience levels, from beginners picking up an instrument for the first time to more seasoned players, are encouraged to enroll in the Youth Live Ensemble. The course is crafted to accommodate a wide range of abilities, offering supportive instruction in a collaborative environment.

South Plains College’s Creative Arts Department has a longstanding reputation for supporting musical talent and performance, both academically and through community engagement. In addition to classroom learning, SPC regularly sponsors events, ensembles, and competitions that enrich student experience and contribute to the vibrant cultural fabric of the South Plains.

How To Get Involved

From Everything Lubbock:

Students can register by January 31 on the online SPC Marketplace and will pay a single $150 payment with no additional sign-up fees. Certain musical equipment will be provided.

The course will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Tuesday from February 10 to April 21 in the Creative Arts Building on the Levelland campus.

$150 for a series of classes is much more affordable than private lessons, making this a more accessible option for many parents, especially if they take advantage of the provided instruments. We love to see that.
