Texans Are Way More Sober-Curious Than You Thought

Are you thinking about living a sober life in Texas? You aren't alone.

Texas recently ranked as the 8th most sober-curious state in the United States in a study by Juno Research.

The study was based on phrases searched online by people in Texas such as 'alcohol withdrawal symptoms', 'alcoholics anonymous', and 'AA meeting near me.' There were approximately 794 sober-related searches online for every 100,000 people in Texas.

So, what does sober-curious mean?

Wikipedia describes sober-curious as a cultural movement that differs from traditional abstinence from alcohol. There doesn't have to be a motivating factor like alcohol abuse for someone to decide they'd like to try out a life without alcohol. Sober-curious people are mainly just thinking harder about how much they want to drink and questioning whether or not their lives could benefit physically or mentally from abstaining or cutting down on drinking.

It can be difficult for someone to abstain from social drinking, especially if their friends and family haven't seen evidence of alcohol ruining their life. It's common for people to question why someone isn't drinking as if it's a necessary part of being an adult.

Sometimes, the benefits of a sober life outweigh the benefits of having a few drinks with friends on a Friday night. It's as simple as that.

Please make sure you support your friends who are sober-curious by not publicly ostracising them. Let them make their own decisions and do your best not to pressure someone to drink who doesn't want to. Their reasons don't matter. Your support does.
