It seems like every vital material is in short supply right now. Trying to buy lumber? Good luck. And now, the structural foundation of a delicious Texas snack may be in danger as well. Even the worst Frito Pie is yummy, and the best are simply transcendent.

Frito Lay is a Texas-based company headquartered in Plano. They also make other snack favorites like Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos, Lay's, and more. Fritos were first produced way back in 1932 and have since gained the devotion of both Texans and non-Texans alike.

However, some parts of the country are facing Frito Lay snack shortages due to an ongoing strike at their Topeka, Kansas factory:

The workers at the Topeka site are striking for more pay and less overtime. Less overtime might sound strange to those of us who enjoy the extra pay, but if I was facing 12-hour days and 7 days a week with no days off, I doubt I could handle the stress at any pay rate.

From Truthout.org:

Some workers have been forced to work 12-hour shifts, seven days a week, for weeks on end due to short staffing. They want to see that change.

I'm not sure the staffing shortage is Frito Lay's fault per se, as there seems to be a labor shortage in many industries and many areas of the country. However, Frito Lay does have the power to control how they treat their employees, even those who are currently on strike.

From KCUR.org:

In its statement, Frito-Lay said the company would focus on “continuing to run the operations of our plant in Topeka” but Hall said the plant hasn’t been fully operational all week because it’s missing most of the workforce that ordinarily runs the plant.

He said the company has terminated the health insurance of employees on strike in an attempt to force workers to cross the picket line. Currently, there are plans for a meeting on July 19 after the company initially said it didn’t plan to negotiate with the union “for the foreseeable future.”

All stick and no carrot seldom works, so here's hoping both Frito Lay and their employees can come to a mutually beneficial agreement and that everyone can get back to enjoying their delicious snacks.
