Texas Based Info Wars Will Live On- As A Parody Of Itself
For folks who are no fans of broadcaster Alex Jones, the schadenfreude must be absolutely delicious right now.
Alex Jones's Texas-based media empire, including the website Infowars, has been auctioned off to the highest bidder.
So somebody had the chance to do the funniest thing ever, and they did: The Onion won the auction.
If you haven't been on the internet for long, The Onion is a satirical online "news" outlet that uses humor to comment on current events and goofy human interest stories- highlighting just how bizarre the news can be.
Some of my favorite classic The Onion headlines include: "Kitten Thinks Of Nothing But Murder All Day" and "World Death Rate Holds Steady at 100 Percent."
The reasoning behind The Onion acquiring Infowars was also, of course, parodied in "Why I Decided To Buy 'Infowars'"
in a stroke of good fortune, a formidable special interest group has outwitted the hapless owner of InfoWars (a forgettable man with an already-forgotten name) and forced him to sell it at a steep bargain
According to NBC News, The Onion has already shut down the Infowars website and plans to bring it back, "featuring well-known internet humor writers and content creators."
In other words, it will live on- as a parody of itself.
The sale was the result of the bankruptcy of Jones, followed by a $1.5 Billion class-action lawsuit won against him by family members of victims who died in the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting.
Alex Jones used his Infowars platform to claim that the shooting, which killed 26 people, was a hoax. His unfounded claims led to the harassment of the family members.
No word yet if The Onion plans to move any operations to Austin, the former home of Infowars.
