Texas Bill Could Allow Suspensions For Kids As Young As Four
Texas lawmakers are working on a controversial bill that would allow Texas children as young as 4 years old to be suspended from school for behavioral problems.
House Bill 6
Under House Bill 6, students from pre-k to second grade could face in-school suspension for up to 10 days, and out-of-school suspension for up to 3 days if campus administrators determine they have threatened the health of fellow students, significantly disrupted the classroom, or are in trouble for weapons-related offenses.
Controversy Over House Bill 6
There are several pros and cons to schools allowing the suspension of very young children. Some students have severe behavioral problems that stem from the way they are being treated at home, and teachers often fear they will fall behind or have it worse at home than at school if they are suspended. On the other hand, a 5-year-old tearing apart a classroom and distracting other students who are ready to learn isn't fair to the others.

Schools don't always have the resources to deal with horrible behavior, nor do teachers have the patience for children who are repeatedly unruly in the classroom. Permitting suspension would help the other children in the classroom to be able to focus on learning, but a child who isn't cared for properly at home may fall even further through the cracks while on suspension.
The heartbreaking reality of problem students is that their behavior is often a result of their home life.
