Texas had no shortage of crime headlines in 2025, but a few cases left a particularly chilling impact. You know...the kind where you read the first paragraph and immediately need to stare into the middle distance.

Below are three women tied to heinous crimes committed in Texas in 2025 who were reported as in custody/behind bars, with bonds so high (or charges so severe) that these cases didn’t just “go away.” These aren’t urban legends, rumor mill posts, or internet creepypasta. These are real cases, with receipts.

1) Brittney (Brittany) DeShay Shields — accused of killing her mother in Rockdale (Milam County)

In late March 2025, police in Rockdale responded to a call about a dead woman inside a home. Investigators said Stephanie McBride, 58, had been shot multiple times, and her daughter, Brittney DeShay Shields, was arrested and charged. Reporting at the time stated she was being held while awaiting extradition, and Milam County’s jail roster page lists her booking and a $1,000,000 bond for capital murder.

Why this case hit hard:  It’s the kind of family violence story that feels especially brutal because of the closeness. This was not a random encounter, but inside a home, involving a parent.

Custody verification: Milam County Sheriff’s Office roster page for “BRITTANY SHIELDS” shows her booking date (04-02-2025) and capital murder charge.

2) Oninda Romelus — accused of shooting four children, killing two (Angleton area / Brazoria County)

In early October 2025, authorities said four children were shot inside a vehicle, with two of them dying from their injuries. Oninda Romelus, identified as the children’s mother, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to reporting.

Why this case hit hard: Crimes involving children always do, but this one also came with a “how is this even real?” element because of the scale (four victims in one event) and, of course, their alleged relationship to the shooter.

Custody verification: A KHOU investigative report published Dec. 10, 2025, states Romelus gave an interview from inside the Brazoria County Jail and that she was being held on a $14 million bond.

(Click2Houston also reported she was booked into the Brazoria County Jail with that bond amount.)

3) Wilma Jamitza Medina — accused of fatally stabbing her 9-year-old son (Universal City / Bexar County)

In September 2025, authorities in Universal City investigated the death of a 9-year-old boy. Wilma Jamitza Medina was arrested and charged with capital murder of a person under 10, according to KSAT reporting based on an arrest affidavit and court records.

Why this case hit hard: The allegations are intensely graphic and emotionally devastating, and the reporting also described disturbing statements and behavior at the scene, per the affidavit.

Custody verification: KSAT reported she was booked into the Bexar County Jail and that court filings showed a $600,000 bond.

(An Express-News writeup also states she remains in jail on that bond.)
