How The Combine In Slaton Is Supporting Victims Of Recent Tragedy

Because I work in media and am constantly exposed to news of violent crime, it doesn't usually "shake" me. And while I always have empathy for the victims, it (luckily) doesn't keep me up at night. However, my carefully crafted shell is cracked after the horrific and senseless shooting that left two people dead and grievously injured two others over a domestic dispute. I am deeply disturbed by what happened, and I'm sure many others share the same sentiment.

How We Can Help After The Slaton Shooting

The only way to combat darkness is with light. That's what The Combine- Commons on the Square (136 W Garza St, Slaton) is doing for the surviving young man, Isaiah, and his family, because of their special connection to him:

One of the victims in last week’s shooting was Isaiah. He was one of my culinary kids for 3 years, and though he graduated 2 years ago, he still comes into The Combine to check in, say hi, eat, and get advice or encouragement.[...] By grace, Isaiah survived. His journey to physical and mental health will be long and arduous. The toll on his family is immeasurable and terrifying. They are facing a mountain.

When something so unthinkably awful happens, it's easy to get discouraged with the world and with humanity. However, the truth is that most people are called to goodness, kindness, and to help. If you feel called to help, I know The Combine and this family will appreciate it.
