Let's keep our little Texans safe.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) wants us all to remember to always stop for school buses that have activated flashing red lights and have the stop arm extended.

In most circumstances, you need to stop regardless of what side of the road you are on. The exception is a four-lane road with a physical median. If the four-lane just has turning lanes, you need to stop there, too.

If you're like me and are a visual learner, this graphic posted by TxDOT on X is helpful. It illustrates the scenarios in which you must stop and the scenario where it's okay to pass on through.

Penalties for failing to stop for a school bus are steep- the first infraction can cost you up to $1,250 and you could end up with a misdemeanor on your record. Of course, if you hurt someone, you'll be in a lot more trouble.

If that doesn't teach you to stop, the second instance could cost you $2,000 and your license could be suspended for six months.

Why Is This So Important?

Because children getting struck and killed by cars while getting on or off the bus happens more often than you would think.

From 2012-2021, 55 children were struck and killed by motorists in this scenario. Even one death is unacceptable as this is 100% preventable. Most of those children were only 5 to 10 years old.

It's very easy to "space out" while you're driving, especially if you are in a routine. However, the routine changes soon, with school buses returning to the road. Exercise care and caution- you'll save yourself a hefty fine and you might also save a precious little life.
