FMX has been basically the same radio station for 30 years. We play what is now called "active rock."  Back in the day it was called "hard rock." Before that, believe it or not, it was called "acid Rock."  Read more after the break.

We play music that is popular with males 18-34 years old, persons 18-34 years old and persons 25-54 years old. Most rock stations never reach that third category, their audience moves onto something else, but for some reason the older rockers have stuck with FMX. As I said, we don't' necessarily program towards those older folks, but we love having our old friends around as well as our new ones.  We try to avoid dipping our toes to deep in trends, preferring to keep it "down the middle." We try not to get too classic, too metal, too alternative or too anything.  We just bring them all together and try to make the most people happy.

What tends to happen when you walk that middle line is the far left and right of it are constantly pulling you to go your way. We don't fall for that. We didn't quit playing metal when new wave came along and we didn't quit playing so-called classic rock when grunge came along. We've dropped many artists along the way (sorry the Beatles don't fit) as our audience grew and changed, but we still play hard rock.

So this is good and bad for the "fringe" elements on both sides. You're not going to hear Coldplay, and you're not going to hear Cannibal Corpse. What we tend to hear, at this point, is "well, all my friends listen too {band name here} so you should play them. You have to remember that "all your friends" are your friends because you share common interests-that doesn't mean that those interests are appealing to the outside world. I found through my connection with Nightmare on 19th Street that there are a ton of Insane Clown Posse fans in town. Should we play them? What about the Flaming Lips? Or the Grateful Dead? They all have decent size fan bases, but can you imagine if we played the Grateful Dead next to the Insane Clown Posse. It would end up making NOBODY happy.

To put this in other terms. If you ran a plumbing supply store, you're going to stock the most popular pipe sizes and only a little bit of the "off" sizes.  1/4 inch pipe sells,  2 and 7/8th inch pipe not so much.

So think of us as a T-bone steak. We're always going to be a T-Bone. If you want a salad, you're going to have to get that elsewhere. I guess I'm belaboring the point here. I just want to thank those of you who have been such great supporters over the years and also thank those who have been minor supporters as well. I wish we could be all things to all people but that is just not possible.
