West Texans Can Adopt Wild Horses and Burros at Upcoming Clovis Event

According to a press release from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management, folks in this area have an upcoming opportunity to welcome new horses and burros onto their land.

120 Wild Horses and Burros Available for Adoption

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host a two-day wild horse and burro adoption and sale event at the Curry County Events Center in Clovis, New Mexico, on July 24-25.

Approximately 120 wild horses and burros will be available for adoption or purchase. Public viewing begins at 8 a.m. Friday, with bidding starting at 10 a.m. Animals will remain available until 6 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Adoption Requirements

BLM staff will process and approve adoption applications onsite. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have no history of animal abuse, of course.

Approved adopters must provide:

• At least 400 square feet of corral space per animal
• Access to food, water, and shelter
• Fencing that is 6 feet for adult horses, 5 feet for yearlings, and 4½ feet for burros
• A covered, stock-type trailer with sturdy walls, floors, and swing gates for transport

About the BLM Adoption Program

The horses and burros available at the event once roamed public lands across the western United States. The BLM periodically removes excess animals to help maintain healthy herd populations and protect rangeland resources.

Since the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was passed in 1973, the BLM has placed more than 280,000 wild horses and burros into approved homes nationwide.
