The City of Lubbock confirmed Tuesday late afternoon that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Lubbock County has hit 100, and two people have now died of the virus.

That number one day earlier was 77, with 1 death. Monday, the City confirmed an additional 26 people had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Many of the newer cases stem from Whisperwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where an outbreak of the coronavirus took place.

"Over the weekend the health department, with the help of staff running the UMC Drive-Through Clinic screened residents and employees," the City said in a statement. "Unfortunately, 12 residents tested positive."

Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope issued a stay-at-home order Sunday at midnight to reduce spread of the coronavirus. The order furthered clarified the essential businesses which will remain open, and asked citizens to adhere to social distancing guidelines while not gathering anywhere in groups. The order goes through April 3rd, at which point it may be extended.

Earlier Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott ordered all nonessential businesses in Texas to close, and schools to remain closed until May 4th.
