Texans are used to EVERY kind of weather. From tornados to "thundersleet" we get our fair share of crazy storms and extreme temperatures. In 2024, Texas experienced more lightning storms than anywhere else in the United States.

There were an estimated 40 million lightning events in Texas last year. Florida had the second-highest number of lightning events, at approximately 15 million, followed by Oklahoma, at 13 million, Kansas, at 10 million, and Louisiana, at 9 million.

One Texas city, in particular, left a striking impression on the rest of the state. Can you guess who?

Teague, Texas located in Freestone County about 100 miles southeast of the greater Houston area saw more lightning action than anywhere else in the state.

According to a study by Vaisala, a Finnish environmental research company, Teague saw 736 lightning events last year. Think about it. That's a rough average of two per day!

If you want to see the best lightning display in Texas, it's time to take a little trip over to Teague where you're sure to get an unbelievable show.

The Houston Chronicle joked that we should "rename the 1-45 Corridor between Galveston and Dallas the National Lightning Highway" and I don't think that's such a terrible idea.

I love a good lightning storm. What about you? Do you have any cool photos you'd like to share with me of lightning storms in your part of Texas? Drop them in a comment below this article or email me at Chrissy.Covington@townsquaremedia.com and let's chit-chat lightning!
