Lubbock Has Plenty Of Restaurants, But We Still Need These Two

I hate to even bring this up, but yes, we are missing a couple of restaurants here.

I almost want to say that we really don't need any more restaurants or fast-food places in Lubbock. It seems like we're a little oversaturated at this point. Let's just say I completely understand if you're already shaking your head.

I was there too. Then I went on vacation.

There were two places I visited in Southern California that reminded me there are still a couple of things I'd love to see around here.

Lubbock Needs A Real Italian Deli

The first isn't even a specific chain. I'm talking about a good, presumably family-run Italian sandwich shop with real imported Italian meats and cheeses.

That doesn't sound like much when I spell it out that way, but having visited one in Denver and another in California, I can tell you these places can be very special. I'm talking "possibly the best sandwich you've ever had in your life" special.

Nessmania

Fresh bread. Great meats. Good cheese. Peppers, oil, vinegar and all the stuff that turns what should be a simple sandwich into something you think about for the rest of the day.

The second place is a franchise.

Yep, you're shaking your head again, but you've probably never had Del Taco.

The easiest way I can describe Del Taco is this: Imagine if Taco Villa (which I love dearly) updated the menu as often as Taco Bell does.

Del Taco has house-made guacamole and plenty of interesting choices (including a limited taco that has...basically a hamburger in it). They also serve amazing crinkle-cut fries, and there always seems to be something new on the menu.

When we were there, they were promoting slow-cooked carnitas, and I have to tell you, they were moist and delicious on my egg burrito.

Let me delve a little further into that burrito.

After the first bite, I actually had to pause and say, "Oh, my God." I simply wasn't prepared for a fast-food breakfast burrito to be that good.

I'll also give five stars to their limited-time funnel cake fries, which were almost too decadent to describe.

So there you go. I'm not demanding that somebody immediately bring these places to Lubbock. We have plenty of restaurants already.

But if you're traveling and happen to come across a real Italian deli or a Del Taco, give them a shot.

They are absolutely worth every penny spent.
