An adorable and very popular 2-month-old baby giraffe named "Zahara" mysteriously broke her leg at the Abilene Zoo. She unfortunately died the morning of October 2nd, 2024 while a medical team worked to help her out.

Zaraha was very playful and a popular attraction at the zoo. She was born on July 20th, and she was already a whopping 6 feet and 6 inches tall. While alive, Zahara brought joy to zoo employees and visitors. The Abilene Zoo posted a tribute to their beloved baby giraffe that you can find here.

A broken leg might seem like a weird thing to die from, but giraffes are built completely differently from humans. You may have noticed...ha...

Dr. Meyerson, assistant director of animal programs at the Toledo Zoo shared the difficulties of caring for and repairing a broken leg on a giraffe in an article from 2016 that discusses a 1-year-old giraffe who suffered a similar fate. Meyerson said, "Immobilizing a giraffe is very challenging because they are so tall and their necks are so long." It's not a completely uncommon fate for giraffes.

May that sweet darling baby giraffe rest in sweet peace. I'm so bummed out I didn't get a chance to pop over to Abilene and see her. Giraffes are the coolest.
