When driving around Lubbock, you may have noticed colorful animal statues by the side of the road. The ones I most commonly pass are the pink dog and the orange fox, and they always brighten my day. Each time I drive by them, I wonder why they're there. I did some research and was saddened to see they wont be around much longer.

I looked into it and discovered that the colorful statues are a part of a public art installation made by Jeffie Brewer with the Lubbock Arts Alliance. The pieces range from 4 to 12 feet tall and weigh between 200 and 500 pounds. The first five statues were placed at major intersections around Lubbock in 2019.

The five original statues consist of Fuchsia Dog, Artmadillo, Green Burd, Blue Pag and Tetelestai. They later made the additions of Orange Fox, Purple Unicorn, Red Bunny and Pink Flamingo in July 2020.

Unfortunately, the original five statues will be taken down sometime this year. They were simply on loan, and it's almost time for them to return to the artist who made them. It's been fun spotting the colorful buddies around town, and I'll be sad to see them go. Thankfully, the four newer additions will remain up until 2022.
