Cannabis Decimalization Could Happen In Lubbock With Our Support
Cannabis prohibition is unjust, inhumane, and a significant missed opportunity- economically speaking. Imagine a Texas flush with the revenue currently hemorrhaging into other states. Cannabis prohibition is ridiculous on so many levels, and the vast majority of folks, regardless of political affiliation, agree it's time to fully legalize Cannabis in the Lone Star State. But how do we get our lawmakers to see the light on this issue?
It's going to take one of two things: full federal legalization or a groundswell of grassroots efforts. I don't know about you, but I don't exactly trust the federal government to get much of anything accomplished right now (or ever, if I'm being honest).
So it's on us. How amazing would it be to see Lubbock take a leadership role in decriminalization? Of course, the ultimate end goal is full legalization, but local decriminalization could represent an important first step. It'll also keep people from getting arrested, going to jail, and potentially having a record over a plant that we all know is relatively harmless when used responsibly- certainly no more harmful than perfectly legal and readily available alcohol.
Freedom Act Lubbock now has a petition ready to sign. If they receive 4800 verifiable signatures from adults that are registered to vote in Lubbock County, the initiative will then be voted on in Lubbock. Note: cannabis decriminalization/ legalization is NOT on the state's November ballot.
Some things to note: this is to decriminalize low-level cannabis offenses on a local level. Federal and state laws could still supersede, and the D.A. could still prosecute some cases. The Sheriff does not answer to the city but the state. However, I'll take any baby steps over no steps at all, especially since it doesn't cost anything to sign a petition.
The petition is available online and each sheet has a spot for eight signatures- you could gather signatures from friends and family if you're feeling particularly pro-active. Freedom Act has several local events coming up if you'd like to sign the petition there including concerts, farmer's markets, and at the TTU Free Speech area.
