Caution: Lubbock Under A Fire Weather Alert
Lubbock residents should be extra careful today.
Texans Should Take Note Of Recent Fires
California residents saw the results of devastating wildfires this past year. Drought and high winds resulted in a true disaster. I have to say that it's amazing that it hasn't happened here. It's true that our landscape is a little less dense, but we have winds that could easily carry embers for long distances very easily.
Lubbock Fire Weather Alert
Lubbock is under a "Fire Weather Alert" today. It means that conditions are optimum for a potential disaster. There are three factors that go into this including sustained winds over 15 miles per hour, low humidity, and a temperature of 75 degrees or over. Those three elements are added together to determine if a Fire Weather Alert will be issued. A
"Red Flag Warning" means the situation has escalated and there's real danger present.
Lubbock Is Prime Fire Country
Lubbock more than qualifies for a Fire Weather Alert today. Our winds are expected to stay strong at 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40. The temperature will top out at 85 degrees, and our humidity will be at 15%. Let's also state this more plainly and say it's been a while since we've had any form of precipitation.
Lubbock Has Fuel For Fires
Things get worse for Lubbock, I can tell from first hand experience that there are very tall grasses, tumbleweeds, grasses, and more that could serve as tinder for any possible fire situation. Can you even imagine flaming tumbleweeds? It's entirely possible. Please be careful today and watch out for possible ignition sources (let cigarettes, open barbeques, etc.).
