The City of Lubbock later this week will drill an exploratory well to try to find a new source of drinking water.

A test well will be drilled 1,400 feet underground into the Dockum Aquifer. Tests will then be run on the water to determine whether the brackish groundwater could become drinking water. The test well will be drilled at the City of Lubbock South Water Treatment Plant in Slaton.

Right now, the City of Lubbock uses water from Lake Alan Henry, Bailey County wells and the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority, with half the supply coming from CRMWA.

According to the city's latest Water Use Report, dated October 31, 2016, CRMWA supplied the City of Lubbock 552,000,000 gallons of water in the fiscal year, Bailey County 277,958,000 gallons and Lake Alan Henry 213,420,000 gallons. The three sources total to 1,043,378,000 gallons of water. Per capita daily use is 136 gallons of water.
