The cast announcements have dropped for the 50th season of Survivor on CBS. One name sticks out for us Lubbock superfans.

I am a big Survivor fan. I have not missed a single season since the show debuted in 2000. In fact, I remember hearing rumbles about the show long before it aired because the idea of dropping a bunch of people on an island to see what happened was still new.

In some ways I think the 2nd season of Survivor was better than the first because by then people had some idea of what was going on. I was very pumped when I heard that a Texans was part of the cast and even more pumped to find out he was a former Red Raider.

Survivor 50 Brings Back a Familiar Face

Colby Donaldson graduated Texas Tech in 1996 and this will actually be his 4th appearance on the show. Despite those later two appearances, Donaldson is best known as the sweet-hearted cowboy who pretty much gave the million dollars to tribemate Tina Wesson.

Back in the day, it was more common for each tribe member to bring one personal item to the island. Donaldson brought a Texas flag—an odd choice at first glance—but it actually proved useful as a makeshift roof at camp.

Donaldson later went on to host other reality competitions and is now 51 years old. It’ll be interesting to see how he interacts with a new generation of Survivor players, who tend to be more ruthless and far more athletic than the old-school cast.

Survivor 48 just wrapped, and Survivor 49 is set to debut this fall. Two cast members from the upcoming season will carry over into Survivor 50. The exact airdate for Survivor 50 has not yet been revealed.
