While the rest of the world panics during a crisis, my pals in Lubbock start looking for ways to help.

Bottled water.

An extension cord.

A guy named Luis, they say, "can fix anything."

In fact, there's something almost unsettling about just how calm West Texans remain during absolute chaos.

Lubbock Handles Emergencies Like a Boss

Spot a twister in the distance? Grandpa keeps mowing the lawn.

Power outage? Suddenly, you know 7 people with a generator, and someone's uncle takes it upon himself to smoke all the brisket in his deep freeze for the neighbors so it won't go to waste.

Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. We saw our fair share of toilet paper hoarders and whatnot during the pandemic. But, for the most part, we keep it pretty cool around here.

I honestly think that growing up here prepares you for minor disasters better than other places. We practiced tornado drills constantly in elementary school. Might have a little to do with it.

We Get Even Friendlier

People seem to become friendlier here during emergencies.

Need jumper cables?

A random man appears.

Need a ride?

Someone you haven't spoken to in years is suddenly headed to pick you up.

Have a weird rash?

Every West Texas mom is ready to take a look at it for you.

(Maybe not the last one. Ask first...but my moms' got you if they don't. That thing looks pretty ugly.)
