Dangerous Dust Storm Creates Hazards for Lubbock Motorists [Photos]

Days in advance of the approaching storm system, local weather professionals warned of a windy Wednesday, and that's exactly what happened on April 10th, 2019.

A historical low pressure system brought damaging wind speeds through the South Plains and reduced visibility to zero at times, which was the cause of many accidents on local roadways.

Imagery from the NOAA GOES-East satellite showed the dust storm as it rolled from the Texas-New Mexico state line toward central Texas.

Wind gusts up to 73mph were recorded by the West Texas Mesonet sites. The dry conditions also created dangerous wildfire conditions. Dust storms are not the same as a Haboob. For more information on the differences in the dirty phenomenon, click here.
