I have the unique privilege of teaching a young lady to drive right now. She's doing great. In fact, better than a lot of other people out there.

Here's a little background before we get started. I have never had a traffic ticket, and I've never been in a wreck. I've tagged someone in a parking lot because I was in a hurry, but my official record is clean overall. I owe a lot of this to taking a defensive driving class at a young age and by operating under the notion that every driver around me is likely to do the most illogical thing possible at any moment. So that's my background. Let's get down to it.

I'm teaching a young lady to drive and to be completely aware of her surroundings. I prepare her for unlikely situations like people coming the wrong way down one-way streets, people putting on a left-turn signal then going right, and other things that could happen.

It turns out that my far-fetched scenarios aren't as bad as the stuff that really happens out there. Let's start with a lack of turn signals, turning from the wrong lane, bump and jumps at stop signs, a lack of understanding of what a yield sign means, complete confusion regarding merging, and more. It's crazy when you look at all of this through a student's eyes and ask them to do things that no one else is doing. The basic driving skills around here are so horrendous that I'm surprised there aren't more accidents.

I hope that all of you who know how to operate a motor vehicle safely will lead by example and teach the next generation better than the one that's on the streets today. I'm not scared that this young lady will be out on the roads soon, but who's out there with her.
