I love dogs. I'm certainly not a dog expert, but boy did I pick this one wrong.

I could pick any number of dogs to be "The State Dog Of Texas". I figured that the choice would be some type of bloodhound or some flesh-and-blood version of "Hank The Cowdog". While I'm certain the Texas State Dog is a good dog, because most dogs are, I never heard of the breed until five minutes ago.

The State Dog of Texas

The Lone Star State's "State Dog" is "The Blue Lacy". Huh? Blue Lacy dogs are apparently very adept at farming, ranching, and hunting duties. They are said to do better when they have a job to do because it helps them burn off energy.  Blue Lacy's are really good looking dogs, but they just look like dogs. What I'm trying to tastefully get to is, the dogs like rather unremarkable, and you would probably confuse one for a mutt.

The Origin

There is a very good reason for the Blue Lacy being the "State Dog Of Texas" and that is because the breed was developed here buy four brothers who settled in Texas around 18070. The brothers last name was "Lacy".

No Disrespect

The more I read on these pups, the more respect I have for them. These dogs are hard working dogs with great stamina. One of their first jobs was to herd free-range hogs, and that's where they picked up the nickname "Lacy Hog Dogs".  All of this hard work and heritage paid of for the dogs in 2005 when the Blue Lacey was named "The State Dog Of Texas".
