There are a few important things about Lubbock that you learn if you come here from another town. Lubbock loves Texas Tech, hates UT, and there is practically a church on every street corner.

I was running errands around town when I was reminded of just how many churches there actually are. I was heading south on Indiana Ave., approaching 98th Street, when I noticed that there were two churches directly across the street from each other. As I continued heading south, I noticed another church off of Indiana not even three minutes away.

Also, on my way to work each day, I pass two churches that are directly next to each other. When I say directly next to each other, I mean it. No buildings in between, just two different churches side by side.

This is something that was a major shock when I first moved here. I knew that Texas was more religious than where I grew up, but I didn’t think it would be so apparent. It really is true when they say it is a part of the bible belt.

Lubbock is actually one of the Texas counties with the most churches. In 2010, Lubbock ranked number 15 of 254 when looking at the number of religious bodies in the county with around 340 places including churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, or other congregations.

Lubbock also used to be the U.S. city with the most churches per capita back in the early 2000s. Even though the city no longer holds that title, it is still very impressive.

So, if you are looking to try out a new church here in the Hub City, then there are plenty of options to pick from. So many in fact, that you can probably walk from one to the other to find out which you prefer.
