A Lubbock winery is helping to mitigate the desperate need for hand sanitizer in West Texas.

English Newsom Cellars at Caprock Winery announced Monday that they'll be donating 1,000 gallons of wine to Hye Rum, who will then distill it into hand sanitizer. The move comes after COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, has effectively closed the city of Lubbock and many local businesses.

The South Plains, along with most of the United States, have seen hand sanitizer fly off store shelves. In Lubbock, grocery giant United Supermarkets placed a limit on the item, among others, to mitigate hoarding and ensure more people could buy it.

The partnership is expected to produce around 100 gallons of hand sanitizer.

"Throughout history it has been the people and businesses that decide to overcome the tragedies that make America what it is today and will be in the future," the winery said.
